TWC’s Tele-Centers Extend Hours for Unemployment Insurance Claimants
AUSTIN – Texas Workforce Commission’s (TWC) Unemployment Insurance (UI) Tele-Centers will provide extended hours from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday from July 14 through Aug. 8. TWC recently announced a 13-week federally funded temporary extension of UI benefits after President George W. Bush signed legislation authorizing Emergency Extended Unemployment Compensation on June 30, 2008. The legislation provides up to 13 additional weeks of UI benefits for eligible Texans who have exhausted their regular UI benefits and are still unemployed. Employers will not be charged for any claims paid on this extension. The last date to apply for benefits under the extension will be March 27, 2009. To be eligible for the extension, individuals must have filed a claim for regular UI benefits on or after May 7, 2006. Eligible claimants will receive the same weekly benefit amount as on their regular claims. All claimants who were eligible when the bill was signed will receive benefits starting with the week of July 6, 2008. As many as 200,000 Texans may be eligible for the extended benefits. TWC is mailing letters to all potentially eligible claimants to explain the application process. Claimants should not contact TWC until they receive a letter unless their address has changed. Claimants may update their address online at http://paymentrequest.texasworkforce.org. To update address information by phone, contact one of the TWC’s UI Tele-Centers listed below. TRIBE, BOARD PARTNER FOR INAUGURAL CAREER JOB FAIR
Workforce Solutions Upper Rio Grande and the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo are partnering for the first ever career job fair on tribal land. The event, Saturday, July 12 from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. at 11100 Santos Sanchez, will include employers with available job opportunities, education entities and workshops. The first of its kind event is FREE and open to the public. Residents in the area that are Native American are especially encouraged to attend to find out more about career and training opportunities. “We’ve had career days here before, but nothing like this,” said Tribal Empowerment Program Director Luis Nunez. “We want to make tribal members and residents in these rural areas aware of available opportunities.” Though this is the first joint career job fair, this isn’t the first joint venture for the tribe and the workforce development board. Together they opened a satellite office on October 18, 2007. The office is historic as it is the first time non-tribal members are being allowed into the reservation to access services. The office is located inside the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo Library Education Career Center at 11100 Santos Sanchez and offers labor market information and workforce services like job search assistance and assessment. Native American job seekers can receive additional assistance through the tribe’s Tribal Empowerment Program. The office is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. |

INTERNATIONAL AWARD
The winners of The 2008 Communicator Awards have been announced by the International Academy of the Visual Arts (IAVA) and Workforce Solutions Upper Rio Grande was selected as a winner of an Award of Distinction. The entry, a :30 radio spot for out-of-school youth, was written by Director of Regional Relations Lauren Macias-Cervantes and was produced by KPRR, Power 102. It promoted money available for those needing their GED or vocational training.
This is the first Communicator Award for the Board and Macias-Cervantes, a four-time Emmy Award Winning Television Producer who now serves as the Board’s Director of Regional Relations.
“Being recognized for our efforts at this level, is truly an honor,” said Workforce Solutions CEO Lorenzo Reyes, “We have never received an award of this magnitude. This is one more indicator that shows we are moving in the right direction to better serve our customers.”
The workforce board works with youth in and out-of-school on multiple levels including job search, mentoring and work experience. In 2007, 2, 746 youth were served in the six-county region. Currently, the board is assisting 300 youth through their summer employment program.
With over 8,000 entries from across the U.S. and around the world, the Communicator Awards is the largest and most competitive awards program honoring the creative excellence for communications professionals.
“The incredible quality and diversity of this year’s entries was an inspiration to the academy and all of our judges. The work reflected the rapidly changing media landscape as the growing amounts of interactive work submitted pushed the limits of the medium, and the quality of the traditional work submitted was again remarkable,” noted Linda Day, director of the IAVA. She added, “On behalf of the entire Academy, we are honored to have judged the 14th Annual Communicator Awards and we are proud to honor the best in creativity and execution from the foremost communications professionals in the business.” |
